Nick Wheatley first competed for Australia in the Junior Men's Quad in 2010 in the World Rowing Junior Championships held in Racice in the Czech Republic, while finishing second in the B Final, the New South Welshman was selected again the following year in the Junior Men's Four to compete in Eton in Great Britain. While Wheatley did not medal, the Sydney-local showed promise and went on to represent Australia in World Rowing Cup 1 in 2013, where he won a bronze medal in the Men's Eight.
In 2014, Wheatley combined with fellow SUBC oarsman Jack Hargreaves to row in the U23 Men's Pair where the duo claimed silver in Varese, Italy. Wheatley was selected alongside Hargreaves again in 2015, both in the Senior team and the U23 team, and the duo were coached for the international season by Mark Prater.
