Dear SA rowing Clubs, Schools and supporters,
Rowing Australia has today announced that due to extreme levels of blue-green algae remaining in the water at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith as a result of the recent floods, the 2021 Australian Masters Rowing Championships will now be held at West Lakes, SA. This is a terrific opportunity for our rowing community to host and experience an Australian Rowing event again, as the last time an event of this caliber was held in SA was 2014. I hope you will join with me in welcoming the other States to SA for the event on Thursday 27 – Sunday 30 May 2021 to be held at West Lakes.
In addition, Paddle Australia this week announced that they will hold their 2021 Australian Championships and Olympic selection regatta at West Lakes on Wednesday 19 – Sunday 23 May 2021. This will be an amazing opportunity to see Australian Olympic athletes competing in their final competition before they head to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
These events will no doubt bring a boost to the engagement levels of both sports in South Australian but it also highlights the high standard regatta course we have at West Lakes, making it an attractive venue to host National competitions.
These events will obviously bring disruption to normal rowing activity at West Lakes during the dates mentioned above. We are working closely with Paddle Australia to understand the opportunity to continue rowing training outside of their event times. Further communication on the impact that both events will have on the use of the lake will be provided in due course.
I recommend that Clubs in SA consider allowing the hire of boats, racks and tents as we are likely to receive requests from interstate athletes in due course. It may be an opportunity for you to generate some revenue from the event.
Further information about volunteering at the 2021 Australian Masters Rowing Championships will come out shortly.
